82. 19 The goats mentioned in Daniel and Matthew mean people who are devoted to the modern-day view that faith is what justifies us.
Survey of Teachings of the New Church #35
35. As for the assertion made above [§30] that the entire theology in the Christian world today is based on the idea that there are three gods, clear evidence for this comes from the Christian teaching regarding justification, which is the primary teaching of the church among Christians both Roman Catholic and Protestant.
The teaching on justification states that God the Father sent his Son to redeem and save human beings. God the Father also gives the Holy Spirit to carry out this work.
All people who hear, read, or say this cannot avoid dividing God into three in their thinking, that is, in the mental image they have. They cannot avoid the sense that one god sent another and works through a third.
As I will demonstrate later on in other parts of this text [§§40, 54, 61, 64– 69], the thought that the divine Trinity is divided into three persons, each of whom is God, permeates all the other teachings of the church of today, as what comes from the head permeates the entire body.
Meanwhile, I invite you to look at the quotations on justification at the beginning of the book [§§2– 15], and consider points of Christian theology both generally and in detail. Also look within yourself when you hear preaching in church or prayers at home: Are you picturing or thinking of anything other than three gods? Pay particular attention to the times when you are praying or singing to one of the three by himself or to the other two by themselves, as frequently happens.
These considerations support the truth of the proposition that the entire theology in the Christian world today is based on the idea that there are three gods.
